Like the Sowing the Seeds of Prayer (SSP) retreat, Sowing the Seeds of Contemplation (SSC) retreat is an effort to complement traditional approaches to lay spiritual formation. It too seeks to provide an opportunity for lay people at the parish level to guide one another in deepening their understanding and practice of the Christian life.
Sowing the Seeds of Contemplation differs from the SSP retreat in a number of ways. First, it draws heavily for its structure and content on the spirituality of Saint Ignatius and his Spiritual Exercises. It is also longer, comprising nine weekly meetings, and is designed specifically for the Lenten season. This allows the flow of the retreat to be in sync with the Church’s preparation for and celebration of Holy Week.
Much depends on a person’s background and experience, but generally SSC group leaders have either participated in or led an SSP retreat. A weekend leaders training workshop is offered each January devoted to a prayerful consideration of Ignatian spirituality. Elements of mindfulness and group dynamics are also offered.
